Preamble

Mental health – have you ever talked about this, I say, before 10 or 15 years, the way we are talking now? Atleast, I have not heard this way. Now, the question is why we are talking about this too much at this time? What made this the talk of the town? So, let’s understand that “why mental health is becoming more important?” through some recent incidents.

Recent incidents

In the recent days, the way, actor Sushant Singh Rajput has chosen the path of death, has broken the heart of many. More, this news has made the conversations over mental health more alive. The reason being simple, he has inspired lot of people in the community through his wonderful acting and powerful messages. I hope, everyone has witnessed his impactful acting and messages in movies like chhichhore, M.S. Dhoni and lot more.  Now, the point is, what compelled him to choose this path? So, before diving deep in to the conversation, let’s understand some more situations.

Mental health & questions

So, the bigger question is that in such situations, is the only path to commit suicide? Is there no option left? Or the pressure caused by such situations is bigger than the life itself.

At this point, let’s start with the understanding of mental health. Mental health is a way to define our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It refers to the state of our mind to handle stress while going through the variety of situations. Therefore, it is important to have sound mental health at every stage of the life.

Now, the questions are – what are the problems with us? How these problems are hampering our emotional well-being? How to overcome these problems to have that strong mental health? If you will note, I have mentioned that mental health was not being discussed this way some 10 or 15 years before. So, what have changed now? What has impacted our life so heavily?

Understanding the narrative

The single answer could be – with the increasing globalisation, competition and technology we have started to synchronise our working with machines. It may sound us little difficult but is true. We are becoming the professionals without emotions. We are having so many contacts in our list but no one or very few would be there, when you really require.

The biggest problem is that in spite of having so many friends, followers, connections on social networks, there is no one or very few who are going to support you during the hard time. More, the question is why they should support you? Almost everyone is there to cherish the happy moments and successes. So why to expect from them? Interestingly, these days, everyone starts pouring their emotions over these networks as something happens. But ask yourself that how many are there to change for the cause in reality? I hope, you would get the answer.

Before 10 or 15 years or even much before, when there was less intervention of technology in our life. We were definitely less connected on these platforms but well connected with the nearby community. We never compared our success rate with that of others like the present scenario. As everyone is different, everyone’s success would also be different. This was the simple fact. Even, in case of failures, we were not afraid with the outcome. Instead, we usually thought of other ways to proceed further.

Harsh reality

Reality is – if technology has brought us close to the global community, it has also separated us with the nearby community in terms of emotions. Similarly, if globalisation has taught us to compete and grow further in order to succeed, it has also not taught us to struggle during the failures.

Now a days everyone is there to applaud at your success. Understand that when you are at the peak of your career, the whole world will walk with you. But on contrary, when you are at the down of your career, only your family and few close friends would be with you. Even, in some cases, you might feel all alone. This is the hard reality of this globalised scenario.

Therefore, don’t get stressed with the failures. They are to make you learn something big not just end your life. If you will learn from them and proceed further, you will become much stronger than before. This strength will let you not convert the pressure in to stress. For those, who think pressure and stress both are the same, they are not the same. In simple way, pressure is external powered while stress is internally developed. So, until & unless, you will not allow, nothing can cause stress to you.

What to do?

So, in order to overcome these problems, take care of yourself with some of my learnings;

1. Connect with the social world but also spare your valuable time with your family and nearby community. They will help you in difficult situations.

2. Share your success stories with the world but share your failures with your family and nearby community. They may help you in offering the solutions & moving further.

3. Don’t take the globalization and competition so heavily that the question comes to your life. Live life to learn and cherish with every moment.

4. Understand there is no solution in ending your life or taking similar decisions. If life is there, you can achieve anything & everything.

5. Be kind to others. Practice yoga, meditation etc. to calm your mind and let the stress go off.

6. Don’t expect much from the community. If they help you, accept it with the humility. But, if not, let it go and move further.

6. Most important, understand that nothing is permanent in this universe. Everything will change. Success and failures are the part of the process of life. They will also change.
