  • Have the courage to make bold decisions in challenging situations.
  • Should be able to deal with conflicts.
  • Should be emotionally intelligent to deal with all kind of emotions.
  • Being honest and supportive.
  • Have to develop a growth mindset.

These qualities are few of the building blocks in the journey of becoming a good leader. In this ever growing and demanding world, leadership is facing lot of challenges these days. But those, who consider these challenges as opportunities and develops the ability to face them, they establish and brand themselves as a leader. In real sense, these challenges give us an extraordinary chance to learn, explore and stretch our strengths and skills needed to be an effective leader.

Now coming to the topic, why many people fail to be a good leader? Although there could be many factors (internal and external) contributing in failure of someone in journey of being a good leader like their actions, mindset, abilities, and relationships. So, let’s take a look over few of the reasons for the failure of leadership

  1. Sometimes leaders set their vision too short while chasing the organizational goals which is not in the benefit of their organizations and for them also. For example, when a leader has a very deep focus on the results and numbers without even considering the culture and values of their organization. Because these results will stay only for only a short period while in the long run, culture and values plays a vital role in the growth and sustainability of any organization.
  2. Fail to communicate effectively; many of the leaders fails in establishing a proper communication with their subordinates due to a lack of their ability to take initiatives.
  3. Fail to listen, sometimes leaders fail in listening to their team members actively and therefore neglect their team’s suggestions. In return it reduces their chance to explore the possibilities in offering a better and effective solution to any situation. Sometimes, listening actively to your team for their suggestions becomes the best opportunity to make it a win-win situation in having a mutual learning for the growth and success of everyone.
  4. Fail to build good relationships. Generally, people get the leadership opportunity to build a solid network for the mutual growth and success of every stakeholder, but ignoring it will leave us in paying a considerable loss.
  5. Wrong Expectations and mindset, leadership position is entirely different in comparison to a subordinate position. While being a leader, it becomes extremely important for one to take responsibility and ownership for the completion of every task. At the same time, a leader must give enough room to his / her team members to help them in nurturing and exploring their skills. But many fail in it due to their selfish attitude and with some wrong expectations.
  6. Putting a full stop to your learning – No matter, in what domain or position one is, one should never stop learning new things. Being a leader, it becomes essential to add on to your learning always to remain prepared for the ongoing and upcoming challenges of the world.
  7. Failing to accept / offer constructive criticism, many leaders fail due to this particular reason. Giving / receiving only positive feedback and praising the self / subordinates is not a good thing to make you / your team productive in any dimension. Leaders should provide some constructive feedback to their team. At the same time, they should also be ready to accept the same as well.
  8. Failing to be adaptive and flexible, leaders should always be ready to accept change and improve themselves according to that change. There might be some situations when as a leader, you may be required to make some tough and bold decisions on strategies to follow in context of the greater benefit of all the stakeholders, then one must be always ready to do so for the greater benefit of the organization.
  9. Fail to change from “me” to “we”: Most of the leaders fails in understanding this simple concept. They forget that leadership is more about a team, not about an individual. As a leader, you will be successful only when your team is successful.
