Preamble
What is success? What do you understand by the meaning of this term? These are some of the questions, which moves around in our mind. Actually, when we think of this word, a plethora of feelings starts generating in our mind. These feelings usually start telling us about those persons who are successful in their field. You can relate this with some examples like Sachin Tendulkar & Virat Kohli (Cricket), Viswanathan Anand (Chess), Rata Tata (Industrialist), Amitabh Bachchan & Irrfan Khan (Cinema) and many more.
Then, what happens? You start relating yourself with their charismatic personality. You start reading about them in order to find that what special they had done in their life to accomplish so much in their field? But, I hope, you all would also be agree with me, that in most of the cases, all this happens for that particular moment. In the next moment, when there is the time to follow the learnings, we become busy in our lives and forgets all this.
Questions?
Now, coming over to those questions, which I need to address through this post. Those questions are what is success? What are the qualities that made a person successful? Is having plenty of money makes you successful? Or there is something else, which is required to be successful? So, before actually defining the meaning of this word, let’s start with drawing this meaning by finding the common point in the above mentioned individuals. Now, What is that common point?
Common point
If you will closely observe, you will find that the common point is, they are the legends of their fields. Now, have your ever noticed that professionally, had Sachin Tendulkar tried himself in movies, Ratan Tata tried in cricket or any other similar examples. The answer is a clear “NO”. Here, you might be thinking, that what wrong has happened with me? Why I have started relating them with other fields? The answer is – to draw some key insights. This key insight is that they have always practiced them for perfection in their key skill area. They have always shown the self-control & discipline in their work to become the legends.
What is other than the common point?
Now, are these the only key insights for becoming successful? Here, the answer is not a straight forward yes or no. let’s understand, why I am saying so? If answer is yes then, anyone can become successful in his field by practicing and mastering in his skills. While, if the answer is no then, what are those additional points for being successful?
Here, I want to ask one more question that, have you ever remembered any cricketer, actor or businessman, who has definitely practiced and mastered his skills at the local level and you treated them as successful as the above examples are? This point could also be understood in a different way. Let’s think for a moment that you play cricket very well in your local roads or you have good acting talent but you have shown this talent only at your home. Now, would you treat yourself as successful as the above examples are? I think, the answer would be a “No”. So, now what are those additional insights?
Additional insight for success
The additional insight is that, along with the practicing & mastering their skills, they have also created an impact over the surrounding or society in general. This is the major important point that, why we consider them as successful? However, practicing and mastering your skills is the first and important step in becoming successful. Because, this is important to have that satisfaction first in yourself which makes you realise that now you can add some value in your target audience.
Key points for success
I hope, now you have got the point that “what is success”? Now, let’s collect these key learnings through the following points;
1. Identify your skills
2. Be self-controlled & disciplined while practicing your skills.
3. Practice in your skills for a never-ending journey of perfection.
4. Master your skills to have self-satisfaction first.
5. Start creating value to the society through your skills.
Now again, I hope, you got the point that you can become personally successful by having self-satisfaction after following initial four steps. But if you want to see yourself successful through the lens of the society then you are required to add values to the society through your skills.
Concluding remark
At last, “Do what makes you happy, be satisfied, be successful”
Thanks

Hi. Nice article. Kindly clarify me about the 5th point you mentioned – Create values to the society through your skills to be successful . But just out of curiosity can you explain it more clearly as I’m not able to understand what Values – Sachin Tendulkar or Amiithab Bachan etc have created through their skills.
Don’t think otherwise for mentioning their names but I’m just trying to understand it properly.
Waiting for your response in this regard. Thanks in advance.
Hi Srikanth,
Thanks for going through the article and getting value from it. So, when it comes to adding value to the society, it means that how your skills in a particular activity are able to impact the lives of people around you. To better understand it through examples, if we see at the recent case of rescue operation in uttarakhand, the skills of rat miners were able to save the lives of people stuck in the tunnel and that made them successful in the operation and added value to the society. Similarly, if someone is master at creating beautiful architectures, his or her skills will add value through creating mesmerizing buildings, monuments and likewise and in long run, may further add value to the economy.
Now, coming over to the examples of Sachin Tendulkar and Amitabh Bachhan, their skills in the fields of cricket and cinema respectively had been able to inspire many people to make their careers in these fields. It might be that I, you, or someone specifically might not follow or admire them for their contribution, but, if you will see in general, their skills and performance in their fields have set them as role models for many to follow their path and that is what can seen as the value addition to the society.
Hope this answer is able to help you understand the fifth point of the article in a better way.
Wishing you the best in all your endeavors.
